Postoperative imaging after lobectomy: predicting the displacement and change in orientation of nonresected lung nodules

Journal of Computer Assisted Tomography Jul 24, 2019

Digumarthy SR, et al. - Preoperative and postoperative computed tomography of subjects who underwent lobectomies and had a separate nonresected nodule in the ipsilateral lung were analyzed by the experts in order to ascertain the impact of a lobectomy to the location and orientation of nonresected lung nodule and its corresponding airway. A total of 50 nodules from 40 cases were reviewed. Nodules were displaced clockwise and counterclockwise following the right upper, right middle, and left lower lobectomies and following right lower and left upper lobectomies, respectively. In the craniocaudal plane, displacement of the remaining nodules was larger, followed by anteroposterior and transverses planes. Hence, following lobectomy, remaining ipsilateral nodules and their associated segmental airways were displaced in an anticipated fashion which may assist in the evaluation of follow-up imaging.
