Postoperative Emergency Department utilization and hospital readmission after cervical spine arthrodesis: Rates, trends, causes, and risk factors
Spine Jul 15, 2018
Derman PB, et al. - Authors quantified the 30- and 90-day Emergency Department (ED) utilization and inpatient readmission rates after primary cervical arthrodesis, to stratify these findings by surgical approach, and to ascertain the risk factors and conditions precipitating these events. Findings suggested an association of patient comorbidities, traumatic pathologies, and surgical approach with increased postoperative complications. The lowest risk was carried by the anterior procedures, followed by posterior and then circumferential. Development of strategies to minimize the rate of postoperative ED utilization and hospital readmission should be encouraged by the awareness of these findings.
