Postoperative delirium in patients undergoing head and neck free flap reconstruction
JAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery Jan 09, 2019
Densky J, et al. - Authors analyzed 515 subjects undergoing free flap reconstruction from January 1, 2006 through December 31, 2012 at the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, The Ohio State University Comprehensive Care Center to assess risk factors for postoperative delirium (POD) and its rate of incidence in subjects undergoing this procedure following head and neck disease. They observed the development of POD among 56 patients. They also found a link between POD and increased age, male sex, increased operative time, tobacco use, and advanced nodal disease, providing a target for quality improvement initiatives. They recognized the absence of an alcohol abuse disorder at the time of surgery could help prevent POD.
