Postoperative delirium in elderly patients is associated with subsequent cognitive impairment
British Journal of Anesthesia Aug 10, 2017
Sprung J, et al. – This study was meant to assess the risk for postoperative delirium (POD) in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia. Furthermore, researchers intended to explore the link between POD and subsequent development of MCI or dementia in cognitively normal elderly patients. Findings indicated that mild cognitive impairment or dementia conferred risk for POD. In addition, a diagnosis of subsequent MCI or dementia was more likely in elderly patients who had not been diagnosed with MCI or dementia but experienced POD.
