Postoperative day 1 levels of parathyroid as predictor of occurrence and severity of hypocalcaemia after total thyroidectomy
Head & Neck May 17, 2018
Karatzanis AD, et al. - Authors evaluated the efficacy of first postoperative day parathyroid hormone (PTH) measurement in order to predict the presence and severity of post-thyroidectomy hypocalcaemia. They compared the preoperative measurements of PTH with postoperative levels in the first morning after surgery. With regard to preoperative and postoperative levels of PTH, all cases of hypocalcaemia were recorded and evaluated. On the first postoperative day, the use of serum PTH levels as a reliable predictive marker for calcium supplementation need and even prolonged hospitalization in cases undergoing total thyroidectomy was suggested by the experts.
