Postoperative antibiotic use among patients undergoing functional facial plastic and reconstructive surgery
JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery Nov 06, 2019
Olds C, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the frequency of prescribing antibiotics after nasal and oculoplastic procedures. Further, they assessed the association between patterns of postoperative antibiotic prescriptions and infection rates. For this retrospective population-based cohort study, IBM MarketScan Commercial and Medicare Supplemental research databases yielded data of 294 039 patients who underwent facial plastic surgery procedures between January 1, 2007, and December 31, 2015. Of these patients, 45.2% of patients filled antibiotic prescriptions after nasal and oculoplastic procedures. A significantly reduced risk of postoperative infections was observed for those who filled antibiotic prescriptions vs those who did not fill antibiotic prescriptions. No association of increased duration of postoperative antibiotics with reduced infection rates was observed.
