Busko A, et al. - Given that the United States has the highest rate and number of incarcerated persons in the world, researchers conducted this study to assess surgical access in this population and quantify postmortem incidence of acute surgical-and trauma-associated pathological conditions of inmates in Miami Dade County, FL. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, more than 2.2 million adults were imprisoned in the United States in 2015, accounting for 0.7% of the total population. Florida has the country's third-largest incarcerated population. Incarcerated persons represent a vulnerable patient population, especially in medical care.
