Postmenopausal hormone use and cutaneous melanoma risk: A French prospective cohort study
International Journal of Cancer Jan 27, 2019
Cervenka I, et al. - In a prospective cohort of 98,995 French women aged 40-65 years in 1990, researchers explored the links between menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) use and melanoma risk. Via biennial self-administered questionnaires, they determined MHT use. They also used Cox proportional hazards regression models adjusted for age and skin cancer risk factors. A total of 444 melanoma cases in 75,523 postmenopausal women were identified from 1990 to 2008. Higher melanoma risk was observed in association with ever use of MHT; this link was strongest among past users and users of MHT containing norpregnane derivatives, with nil heterogeneity across types of MHT. A similar link was observed across durations of use among MHT users. After adjustment for UV exposure, similar links were noted between MHT use and melanoma risk. Overall, a strong association between MHT use and melanoma risk was not supported in this study.
