Postmenopausal hormone therapy is accompanied by elevated risk for uterine prolapse
Menopause Feb 01, 2019
Rahkola-Soisalo P, et al. - The former use of estradiol-progestogen postmenopausal hormone therapy was compared between nonhysterectomized women with a uterine prolapse surgery (N = 12,072) and control women (N = 33,704). Using the Finnish National Hospital Discharge Register and the Finnish Central Population Register, they identified the women with a history of uterine prolapse operation and the control women, respectively. More often use of hormone therapy was observed among women with uterine prolapse than control women. The use of hormone therapy significantly enhanced the risk for prolapse, the risk higher with longer exposure. This suggests the weakening of the pelvic floor with the postmenopausal use of estradiol in combination with various progestogen regimens, resulting in uterine prolapse.
