Posterior capsule opacification rate after phacoemulsification in pediatric cataract: Hydrophilic vs hydrophobic intraocular lenses

Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery Oct 08, 2019

Sen P, et al. - In pediatric cataract surgery, researchers compared the rate of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) of hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lenses (IOLs) and hydrophobic acrylic IOLs. This retrospective case series was performed at Sadguru Netra Chikitsalaya, Chitrakoot, India. They reviewed the records of children who had uneventful cataract surgery with acrylic IOL implantation from 2010 to 2016 and a follow-up of at least 1-year. Participants in the study were 80 children (103 eyes). Investigators found that hydrophilic acrylic IOLs and hydrophobic acrylic IOLs implanted in the bag had similar visual and surgical outcomes and an equivalent PCO formation rate when performing PPC and anterior vitrectomy.
