Postdischarge virtual visits for low-risk surgeries: A randomized noninferiority clinical trial
JAMA Surgery Jan 17, 2021
Harkey K, Kaiser N, Zhao J, et al. - Researchers compared the outcomes of all-cause 30-day hospital encounter proportion in correlation with video-based postdischarge virtual follow-up vs in-person follow-up. In this randomized clinical trial, they included 432 patients who underwent minimally invasive appendectomy or cholecystectomy by a group of surgeons who cover emergency general surgery at these 2 hospitals, and randomized them in a 2:1 fashion to video-based virtual visit or in-person visit. No significant difference in the postdischarge hospital encounter proportion after minimally invasive appendectomy or cholecystectomy was evident (12.8% for virtual vs 13.3% for in person). Virtual visits yielded an equal amount of time with the clinician but significantly reduced the overall time commitment for postdischarge visits.
