Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): The hidden morbidity of abnormally invasive placenta (AIP)
Placenta Sep 14, 2017
Tol I, et al. - This research determined if women with the abnormally invasive placenta (AIP) exhibited a greater likelihood of screening positive for post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than those who had an uncomplicated caesarean delivery (CD) and how this compared to women who experienced unanticipated emergency postpartum hysterectomy (EPH)/postpartum haemorrhage (PPH). 50% of women with antenatally diagnosed AIP screened positive for severe PTSD due to their delivery experience. It was comparable to those who had an unexpectedly traumatic delivery. A prominent, hidden morbidity was related to the AIP diagnosis. The data ought to inform future postnatal management of AIP. The initiation of a postnatal PTSD screening and intervention program for AIP patients, the establishment of peer support groups and better education for families and primary healthcare professionals were recommendations put forth in this study.
