Post-therapy pathologic tumor volume predicts survival in gastric cancer patients who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy and gastrectomy
BMC Cancer Aug 17, 2019
Tang X, He Q, Qu H, et al. - Among advanced gastric cancer (GC) patients who had neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and gastrectomy, researchers investigated the validity of post-therapy pathological tumor volume (ypTV) as an independent prognostic factor. They assessed clinicopathologic factors using univariable and multivariable analysis in 253 GC patients who had gastrectomy between January 2010 and December 2016. They used π* (tumor diameter/2)2 *tumor invasion depth (cm3) to calculate ypTV. The identified independent prognostic factors were tumor volume (ypTV stage), ypN stage, response to NAC, vascular invasion, and ypTvNM staging as seen using multivariable analysis. Overall, using ypTV as an independent prognostic factor for GC patients post-NAC was recommended. For GC patients who received NAC plus gastrectomy, ypTvNM staging was recommended to enhance the accuracy of prognostic prediction.
