Post stroke depression and risk of stroke recurrence and mortality: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Ageing Research Reviews Feb 06, 2019
Cai W, et al. - Researchers analyzed evidence from observational studies reporting on the link between post-stroke depression and risk of stroke recurrence and mortality via systematic review, meta-analysis, and meta regression. These studies were identified from Medline (via PubMed), Web of Science databases, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, which were searched until August 2018. Hazard ratios from observational studies were extracted and pooled. The analysis included 15 prospective cohort studies with 250,294 participants, 139,276 cases, and follow-up periods ranging from 1 to 15 years. For post-stroke depression and all-cause mortality, the estimated hazard ratio was 1.59. With regard to the link between post-stroke depression and stroke recurrence, there was insufficient evidence. Overall, they noted a significantly increased risk of mortality reported in association with post-stroke depression in stroke survivors.
