Post-operative outcomes of open reduction and internal fixation vs circular external fixation in treatment of tibial plafond fractures: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Injury May 19, 2020
Malik-Tabassum K, Pillai K, Hussain Y, et al. - Researchers compared open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) vs circular external fixation (CEF) for treatment of tibial plafond fractures (TPF), focusing on post-operative complications as well as functional outcomes of these surgical techniques. For this purpose, they performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of 5 eligible comparative studies with 239 fractures, which were identified from PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus and Cochrane library. They found that post-operative complication rates and functional outcomes were comparable between CEF and ORIF, and both represent acceptable management choices for surgical treatment of TPF. Experts noted that there is a scarcity of high-quality evidence concerning the optimal fixation method for TPF.
