Post-operative complications of total joint arthroplasty in obese patients stratified by BMI
Journal of Arthroplasty Oct 14, 2017
Zusmanovich M, et al. - This study assessed postoperative complication rates across 3 BMI categories of patients undergoing primary TJA and investigated if a transition to lower BMI category lowered complication risks. As per observations, obese patients had increased rates of medical and surgical complications. Data indicated a stepwise increase in complications rates when transitioning to higher BMI groups. Researchers concluded that pre-operative counseling and interventions to decrease BMI should be explored before offering elective surgery to obese patients.
