Post-MGUS diagnosis serum monoclonal-protein velocity and the progression of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance to multiple myeloma
Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention Nov 25, 2019
Chang SH, et al. - Researchers examined the predictive value of the rate of rise in serum monoclonal protein concentration during the year after monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) diagnosis—M-protein velocity—for progression of MGUS to multiple myeloma. Using data from the U.S. Veterans Health Administration system, they included 128 cases with MGUS and 490 matched controls. Relative to the control group, the case group contained a higher percentage of patients with M-protein velocity > 0.1 g/dL/year. They noted a positive association of M-protein velocity of > 0.1 g/dL during the year following MGUS diagnosis with progression of MGUS to multiple myeloma. Based on these findings, they recommend considering more frequent monitoring among patients with a positive M-protein velocity during the year after MGUS diagnosis for early detection and timely treatment of multiple myeloma.
