Post-discharge extended care contributes to the disease control of patients with COPD: A Chinese study
International Journal of COPD Dec 20, 2018
Li M, et al. - In this study involving 140 patients with GOLD-2 to -4 of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), researchers assessed the efficacy of extended care by the St George’s Respiratory Questionnaire 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), pulmonary function test, and blood gas analysis. They reported improved activity ability, relief in clinical symptoms, and reduction in the impact degree of COPD to daily life as consequences of extended care in COPD patients. Other benefits included improved mental health condition compared with usual care. Also, ventilation function showed improvements, acute exacerbation rate declined, and blood gas levels improved with extended vs usual care. These positive impacts of extended care evident in patients with COPD after discharge are suggestive of the contribution of extended care to the disease control of patients with COPD.
