Post-discharge complications in frail older patients after surgery for colorectal cancer
European Journal of Surgical Oncology Jul 13, 2018
Ommundsen N, et al. - The proportion of frail older colorectal cancer patients who developed complications only after discharge was determined. In addition, researchers assessed the severity of post-discharge complications and the time point at which the most frequent complications occurred. They reported frequent encountering complications following colorectal cancer surgery in frail older patients after discharge from hospital. Most frequently, post-discharge complications were grade II. Urinary tract infections and superficial surgical site infections were noted to be the most common types of complications that occurred late in the postoperative course. Patients should be informed regarding these complications. As the length of stay after surgery decreases, this seemed increasingly important. When complications are used as a quality measure, it should be clear whether only in-hospital complications are registered.
