Positive influence of Mediterranean diet on neurodegenerative diseases
Journal of the Neurological Sciences Jan 28, 2022
NOTE, original article title: Mediterranean diet adherence, gut microbiota, and Alzheimer or Parkinson disease risk: A systematic review
The impacts of adherence to Mediterranean diet (MeDi) on the gut microbiota were assessed in relation to Alzheimer disease (AD) or Parkinson disease (PD) risk, by systematically reviewing sixty-four studies from PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, Web of Science, Global Health, Biological Abstracts, and Grey Literature Report databases.
A lower risk of AD and PD was observed in relation to adherence to the MeDi.
Eight genera and two species of bacteria were found to have an inverse association with MeDi and AD.
Eight genera and three species showed an inverse association with MeDi and PD.
Weak MeDi adherence, gut dysbiosis, and AD or PD could be in a chain of causality.
