Poorly controlled diabetes increases the risk of metastases and castration-resistant prostate cancer in men undergoing radical prostatectomy: Results from the SEARCH database

Cancer May 03, 2019

Nik-Ahd F, et al. - Researchers retrospectively reviewed data from 1,409 men who underwent radical prostatectomy (RP) from 2000 to 2017 at eight Veterans Affairs hospitals to test if hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is associated with long-term prostate cancer (PC) outcomes among diabetic men undergoing RP. Among participants, an HbA1c value <6.5% was noted in 699 patients (50%), an HbA1c value of 6.5% to 7.9% was noted in 631 (45%), and an HbA1c value ≥8.0% was noted in 79 (6%). Outcomes revealed a correlation of a higher HbA1c value with metastases and castration-resistant PC. Biochemical disease recurrence was not linked to HbA1c in multivariable analysis.
