Poor sleep is related to metabolic syndrome severity in adolescents with PCOS and obesity

Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Jan 13, 2020

Stacey Simon S, Rahat H, Carreau AM, et al. - In order to examine differences in objective markers of sleep in adolescents with obesity and olycystic vary syndrome (PCOS) with and without metabolic syndrome (MS), researchers conducted a cross-sectional study. Further, they evaluated the associations between sleep markers and MS markers. They recruited 30 adolescents with PCOS and obesity with MS or 36 without MS. Compared to those without MS, adolescents with obesity and PCOS who also had MS had significantly worse sleep disordered breathing involving higher apnea–hypopnea index and arousal index. They found that sleep disordered breathing was more prevalent in those with MS among girls with PCOS and obesity, and poor sleep behaviors were correlated with metabolic dysfunction and more MS symptoms. In the evaluation of adolescents with PCOS and obesity, sleep health should be included.
