Poor short-term glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes impairs the intestinal mucosal barrier: A prospective, single-center, observational study

BMC Endocrine Disorders Mar 14, 2019

Shen L, et al. - Investigators assessed 66 subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and 33 healthy controls to study the association between daily glycemic fluctuation and the intestinal mucosal barrier dysfunction in T2DM. They noted higher levels of serum endotoxin and fasting blood glucose levels in candidates with T2DM vs the control group. They also found that the standard deviation of blood glucose (SDBG) within 1 day and the largest amplitude of glycemic excursions (LAGE) were higher in the high endotoxin group when compared with the low endotoxin group. A positive association between SDBG and endotoxin was noted in a multiple linear stepwise regression. They concluded higher risk linked with intestinal mucosal barrier injury among T2DM cases who were incompetent of managing stable blood glucose level.
