Poor prognosis in Epstein-Barr virus-negative gastric cancer with lymphoid stroma is associated with immune phenotype

Gastric Cancer Apr 12, 2018

Cho CJ, et al. - Experts contemplated the expression of programmed cell death-1 (PD-1), programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1), and the density of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) including CD3+ and CD8+ T cells, along with their prognostic significance in patients with gastric cancer with lymphoid stroma (GCLS) who were positive and negative for Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) infection. The variations in the tumor immune micro-environment between EBV+ and EBV- GCLS were disclosed through histopathological similarity, quantitative multispectral imaging. This, in turn, suggested that the underlying pathogenesis varied in these 2 disease entities. It was inferred that TIL density could serve as a prognostic marker in patients with GCLS.
