Poor prognosis for thin ulcerated melanomas and implications for a more aggressive approach to treatment
Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology Jan 20, 2019
Hawkins ML, et al. - In this population-based series, 43,008 non-Hispanic whites diagnosed with cutaneous melanoma between 2004 and 2013 from the California Cancer Registry were assessed to estimate the chances of survival for AJCC stage T1 thin melanoma tumors, defined as less than 1mm at diagnosis. Investigators compared the survival rate in cases with thin ulcerated tumors to subjects with stage II tumors who were receiving more aggressive treatment. They observed 6% lower survival in subjects with thin ulcerated tumors vs candidates with thin non-ulcerated tumors at 12 months. But survival difference increased at 24 months and continued to do so over 2-fold by 60 months.
