Polypharmacy and risk of falls and fractures for patients with HIV infection and substance dependence
AIDS Care Oct 19, 2017
Kim TW, et al. - Authors designed this work to assess whether polypharmacy, as measured by the number and type of medication, had an association with falls and fractures among people with HIV infection (PLWH) and DSM-IV substance dependence in the past year or ever injection drug use (IDU). In the study population, there appeared an association of a higher number of medications with greater odds of having a fall requiring medical attention. The association seemed largely related to the sedating medications. They recommend future studies to investigate if reducing such polypharmacy, particularly sedating medications, lowers the risk of falls.
