Point-of-care ultrasound diagnosis of small bowel-small bowel vs ileocolic intussusception

The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Jun 21, 2019

Park BL, et al. - Small bowel-small bowel intussusception (SB-SBI) vs ileocolic intussusception identified by point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS) were compared regarding the clinical characteristics and outcomes. Researchers performed a retrospective cohort study of thirty-seven patients with intussusception (21 patients (57%) with SB-SBI) identified, over a 4-year period, by PoCUS, at a single, tertiary care, urban pediatric emergency department (ED) of intussusception. Observations suggest a possible higher occurrence of SB-SBI than previously thought when screened with ED PoCUS. Older children with SB-SBI show a possibility of presenting with underlying lead-points and may require surgical intervention. Variants of intussusception could be differentiated using PoCUS, allowing clinicians to better manage these patients accordingly. These variants range from a surgical emergency to a transient source of abdominal pain that may be recurrent and otherwise unexplained.
