PLIF surgery with titanium-coated PEEK or uncoated PEEK cages: A prospective randomised clinical and radiological study
European Spine Journal Oct 28, 2020
Schnake KJ, Fleiter N, Hoffmann C, et al. - This study was intended to correlate clinical outcomes and fusion rates of uncoated polyetheretherketone (PEEK) cages with titanium-coated PEEK cages in posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) surgery. Researchers performed a prospective randomized study including a total of 60 patients with one- or two-segment lumbar degenerative diseases. They assessed fusion rates on plain x-rays and CT scans after 6 and 12 months. They also conducted clinical follow-up (visual analogue scale, VAS; Oswestry Disability Index score, ODI; EQ-5D) for 24 months. This study’s findings reveal that for PLIF, PEEK and titanium-coated PEEK cages produce equally favorable clinical and radiological results up to 24 months post-surgery. There was no difference in the fusion rate.
