Platelet-rich plasma treatment for melasma: A pilot study
Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology Oct 05, 2019
Sirithanabadeekul P, et al. - This is the first study investigating the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment for melasma. Participants in the study were 10 female patients with bilateral mixed-type melasma. PRP was injected intradermally on one side of the face (PRP condition) and normal saline on the other (control condition) over 4 treatment sessions that each took place every 2 weeks. According to this randomized, split-face, single-blinded prospective trial, within 6 weeks of treatment, PRP injection significantly improved melasma in terms of modified Melasma Area and Severity Index scores, patient satisfaction, and Antera-assessed melanin levels. Intradermal PRP injection could, therefore, be used to treat melasma as an alternative or adjuvant therapy. However, additional trials are required to evaluate their long-term effectiveness and safety more rigorously.
