Platelet dysfunction on thromboelastogram is associated with severity of blunt traumatic brain injury

American Journal of Surgery Oct 01, 2019

Kay AB, et al. - Given that thromboelastography-platelet mapping could assist in measuring platelet dysfunction associated with isolated traumatic brain injury (TBI), researchers investigated whether platelet dysfunction can be detected following blunt TBI. in addition, they examined the association of the degree of dysfunction with TBI severity and in-hospital mortality. They conducted a retrospective review of 119 adult trauma patients who were admitted to a single level 1 trauma center from August 2013 to March 2015. The occurrence of platelet dysfunction was observed early after isolated blunt traumatic brain injury. The degree of platelet dysfunction was identified to be associated with the severity of brain injury. Increased odds of in-hospital mortality were evident in correlation with the presence of platelet dysfunction after isolated blunt traumatic brain injury.
