Platelet count is associated with the rate of lymph node metastasis in lung adenocarcinoma

Cancer Management and Research Oct 10, 2020

Qu C, Li T, Tang Z, et al. - Since the involvement of platelets in tumor metastasis in lung adenocarcinoma (ADC) has been shown in studies, researchers investigated the link between platelets and different lung pathological subtypes in this study. Participants were 852 patients with lung ADC who had surgery and lymph node dissection. In these patients, lymph node metastasis and other factors were analyzed to determine their connection with platelet count and histological subtype. Findings showed a significant link of raised platelet counts with a higher rate of lymph node metastasis, even if the platelet counts were within the normal range. Patients with solid-predominant histology were found to have significantly higher platelet counts, relative to patients with other histologies. In patients with lung ADC, experts also suggested a likely crucial role of VEGF-C in lymphatic metastasis. It was hypothesized that lymph node metastasis in lung ADC patients may be reduced by administering antiplatelet therapy.
