Plasma retinol and the risk of first stroke in hypertensive adults: A nested case-control study
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition Feb 14, 2019
Yu Y, et al. – Using a nested case-control design, researchers undertook this study to assess the impact of plasma retinol on the risk of first stroke in hypertensive patients from the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial (CSPPT). They also examined any possible effect modifiers. Participants included 620 patients with first stroke and 620 matched controls. A double-blind, daily treatment with either 10-mg enalapril and 0.8-mg folic acid or 10-mg enalapril alone was randomly administered to 20,702 hypertensive patients in the CSPPT. Participants in quartiles 2–4 vs those in quartile 1 had significantly lower risks of first stroke and first ischemic stroke when retinol was assessed as quartiles. Overall, findings revealed a significant inverse link between plasma retinol and the risk of first stroke among Chinese hypertensive adults. However, first hemorrhagic stroke was not markedly impacted by plasma retinol.
