Plasma omentin levels are inversely associated with atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes patients with increased plasma adiponectin levels: A cross-sectional study
Cardiovascular Diabetology Dec 12, 2019
Nishimura M, Morioka T, Hayashi M, et al. - Since a paradoxical link between adiponectin and cardiovascular mortality has been suggested across various clinical settings including type 2 diabetes in recent studies, researchers defined the clinical characteristics of type 2 diabetes patients with raised adiponectin levels and analyzed the link between omentin and atherosclerosis in those patients. Participants were 413 patients with type 2 diabetes. Using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, measurements of fasting plasma omentin and total adiponectin levels were obtained. Using ultrasonography, the measurement of intima-media thickness (IMT) of the common carotid artery was obtained. On the basis of the median value of plasma adiponectin, the participants were stratified. Findings revealed an inverse link of plasma omentin levels with IMT in type 2 diabetes patients having raised adiponectin levels and multiple cardiovascular risk factors. In type 2 diabetes patients, omentin protected against atherosclerosis development—an effect potentially affected by adiponectin level and cardiovascular risk status.
