Plasma glucose levels increase during spontaneous attacks of migraine with and without aura
Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain Feb 15, 2020
Zhang DG, Amin FM, Guo S, et al. - Plasma glucose changes during the ictal state of migraine vs the interictal state were investigated. Researchers conducted a sub-study of a larger study conducted at Rigshospitalet Glostrup in the Capital Region of Denmark, including 31 patients (24 F, 7 M, 13 with aura, 18 without aura). During and outside of spontaneous migraine attacks with and without aura, they performed measurement of plasma glucose levels. For diurnal variation of plasma glucose, they performed the correction of plasma glucose values by subtracting the difference between the moving average (intervals of 2 hours) and overall mean from the plasma glucose values. During spontaneous migraine attacks, they identified higher plasma glucose values; this was noted independent of the presence of aura symptoms and not identified to be related to pain intensity, peaking in the early phase of attacks.
