Plasma copeptin is increased and associated with smaller kidney volume in young adults born very preterm

Flahault A, Bollée G, El-Jalbout R, et al. - In this study, young adults born preterm exhibited higher plasma copeptin (a surrogate marker for vasopressin levels), and an association of plasma copeptin with a more severe neonatal course and smaller kidney volume was revealed.
This is a case-control study of 101 adults born very preterm (<30 weeks of gestation) and 105 control adults born full-term.
Median (IQR) copeptin levels in the preterm and the term groups were 8.2 (6.3, 12.4) and 6.1 (4.3, 9.0) pmol/l, respectively, in males; and were 5.2 (3.9, 7.6) and 4.0 (2.8, 5.7) pmol/l in females in the respective groups.
Further elevation in copeptin levels was seen in adults born preterm with history of bronchopulmonary dysplasia.
The preterm group showed smaller kidney volume, adjusted to height, and higher albuminuria, and both of these were related to higher plasma copeptin levels.
