Plasma calprotectin and risk of cardiovascular disease: Findings from the PREVEND prospective cohort study
Atherosclerosis Jun 21, 2018
Kunutsor SK, et al. - Researchers examined the link between circulating calprotectin (an inflammation-associated protein) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, and if that connection can be used to predict risk. Study participants included those from the PREVEND prospective study, with plasma calprotectin measurements made at baseline. They estimated hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for CVD. They found that calprotectin concentration showed a log-linear correlation with risk of CVD, which might depend, in part, on high-sensitivity C-reactive protein. They noted that as a result of adding calprotectin to conventional risk factors, an improved CVD risk evaluation can be attained using measures of reclassification and -2 log likelihood.
