Plasma biomarkers of brain injury in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy
The Journal of Pediatrics Feb 26, 2018
Massaro AN, et al. - This study was conducted to assess the plasma brain-specific proteins and cytokines as biomarkers of brain injury in newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). The effect of erythropoietin (Epo) treatment on the association between biomarkers and outcomes was determined. In newborns with HIE, increased plasma brain-specific proteins and cytokine levels in the first 24 hours of life were related to worse brain injury by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It was also noted that only Tau and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels were associated with neurodevelopmental outcomes.
