Placental morphology and the prediction of underlying cardiovascular risk factors

Canadian Journal of Cardiology Feb 03, 2021

Zaza A, Pudwell J, Bainbridge S, et al. - Researchers intended to determine if there is an association between the placental morphology and cardiovascular risk (CVR) when evaluated at six months postpartum in women who experienced pre-eclampsia (PE). When women attended the Maternal Health Clinic (MHC), were diagnosed with PE, and had at least one placenta measurement available, they were eligible. According to findings, 186/216 females with PE who attended the MHC met the requirements for inclusion. Greater gestational age was correlated with a reduced chance of high lifetime risk for CVD. An association was found between the placenta to birth weight ratio and CVD risk. Placental measurements can be used to identify those who are likely to be at greatest risk for CVD later on in life and who would benefit most from postpartum risk screening.
