Physician-office vs home uptake of colorectal cancer screening using FOBT/FIT among screening-eligible US adults
Cancer Medicine Oct 28, 2019
Chido-Amajuoyi OG, et al. – Because guidelines issued by the American Cancer Society and US Preventive Services Task Force emphasize the use of guaiac-based fecal occult blood tests (FOBTs)/fecal immunochemical tests (FITs) for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening at home, researchers examined the prevalence as well as correlates of CRC screening employing FOBT/FIT in physicians' office vs at home. In the overall sample of screening-eligible adults (n = 9,403), CRC screening using FOBT/FIT was performed by only 10.4% of respondents in the preceding year, indicating the low overall uptake rates of FOBT/FIT in the United States. By contrast, high in-physician office testing was evident, suggestive of a missed opportunity for effective screening and poor adherence of physicians to national guidelines. Determinants of uptake of FOBT/FIT at home or in-office are sociodemographic factors, which should be acknowledged in designing interventions directed at providers and the general population.
