Physical restraint use in adult patients presenting to a General Emergency Department
Annals of Emergency Medicine Aug 19, 2018
Wong AH, et al. - Given that the prevalence of agitation among Emergency Department (ED) patients is increasing and that physical restraints routinely used are associated with serious safety risks, researchers delineated restraint patterns in the general ED in order to guide future investigation in the management of behavioral disorders. A cross-sectional study of adult patients presenting to 5 adult EDs within a large regional health system for 2013 to 2015, and with a physical restraint order during their visit was conducted. As per findings, alcohol or drug use was strongly associated with physical restraints. Further, they identified a unique elderly population with behavioral disturbances in the ED.
