Physical health burden among older men and women with bipolar disorder: Results from the GAGE-BD collaboration
The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Dec 15, 2021
Almeida OP, Dols A, Blanken MAJT, et al. - The prevalence of physical morbidities was compared between men and women with older adult bipolar disorder (OABD), and between men with vs without OABD.
The collaborative Global Aging & Geriatric Experiments in Bipolar Disorder (GAGE-BD) database and non-OABD data from the Health In Men Study were assessed in this cross-sectional analysis.
A total of 1,407 participants with OABD aged 50 to 95 years were investigated, of whom 787 were women.
Findings revealed greater prevalence of physical health problems in women than men with bipolar disorder, and in men with vs without bipolar disorder.
Researchers recommend health services to address the physical health needs of older adults with bipolar disorder, more noticeably those affecting women.
