Physical function and actigraphy in intensive care survivors: A prospective 3-month follow-up cohort study
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Feb 28, 2019
Estrup S, et al. - In this prospective cohort study, researchers examined adult patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for more than 24 hours in order to assess the link between activity levels in the ward after discharge from ICU and physical function at 3-month follow-up. Using accelerometers, evaluations were made for up to 7 days at the ward. Using the Chelsea Critical Care Physical Assessment Tool (CPAx), the participants were assessed at discharge from ICU and at 3-month follow-up. Overall 66 consecutive, eligible patients were screened, of those, actigraphy was completed by 41 and 19 patients were visited at 3 months. At 3-month follow-up after ICU treatment, most patients had improved physical function. Findings revealed no link between activity levels for 1 week after ICU discharge at the ward and better physical function at 3-month follow-up.
