Physical activity is associated with better vascular function in children and adolescents with congenital heart disease
Canadian Journal of Cardiology Jul 01, 2020
Lopez JR, Voss C, Kuan MTY, et al. - Given the importance of aortic stiffness as a marker of cardiovascular risk and its elevation in children and adolescents with congenital heart disease (CHD) vs healthy children, researchers here examined the interaction between aortic stiffness and physical activity—a key determinant of aortic stiffness—among children with CHD. They conducted a cross-sectional cohort study including 104 children and adolescents [61% male; 85% consent rate; a mean (standard deviation) age: 12.4 (2.4) years] with moderate-to-complex CHD from British Columbia Children’s Hospital and travelling partnership clinics across the province of British Columbia and the Yukon territory. Among these participants, there was a correlation of higher levels of physical activity with better vascular function. Findings thereby support promoting physical activity as a high priority in the care of children and adolescents with CHD.
