Physical activity for symptom management in women with metastatic breast cancer: A randomized feasibility trial on physical activity and breast metastases
Journal of Pain and Symptom Management Sep 10, 2019
Yee J, Davis GM, Hackett D, et al. - Researchers examined whether physical activity program is safe and feasible among women with metastatic breast cancer. Further, they determined the efficacy of the program. They randomized 14 women with metastatic breast cancer to either a control group or an exercise group. In the exercise group, they implemented an 8-week home-based physical activity intervention comprising twice-weekly supervised resistance training and an unsupervized walking. Outcomes support the feasibility and safety of implementing a partially supervised home-based physical activity program for women with metastatic breast cancer. This population well-tolerated and achieved the dose of the resistance training component. In contrast, they observed poor adherence and compliance to the walking program. Preliminary data thereby suggest that women may show improvements in physical capacity and may live well with their disease following the implementation of physical activity program, comprising predominantly resistance training.
