Physical activity as an effect modifier of the association between obesity and venous thromboembolism: A Danish population-based cohort study
Clinical Epidemiology Dec 11, 2020
Solli H, Olsen M, Larsen FB, et al. - By performing this population-based cohort study, researchers investigated if physical activity acts as a modifier of the link between obesity and venous thromboembolism (VTE), given that obesity is an established risk factor for VTE. For this purpose, experts estimated incidence rates and hazard ratios of VTE for classes of body mass index, in the total study population (n = 57,523) as well as for physically active (n = 25,387) and inactive persons (n = 30,902) separately. They found that physical activity was an effect measure modifier of the link between obesity and VTE. Therefore, physical activity resulted in decrease of the absolute rate of VTE in obese people but raised the relative rate of VTE in obese vs normal weight participants.
