Physical activity and sedentary time in relation to semen quality in healthy men screened as potential sperm donors

Sun B, Messerlian C, Sun ZH, et al. - Researchers examined how the physical activity or sedentary time affects semen quality parameters. At the Hubei Province Human Sperm Bank of China, 746 healthy men screened as potential sperm donors completed the long-form International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and provided repeated semen samples (n = 5,252) during an approximately 6-month period. From the IPAQ, they obtained total metabolic equivalents (METs), moderate-to-vigorous METs and sedentary time. Trained clinical technicians ascertained sperm concentration, total sperm count, progressive motility and total motility in repeated specimens. The analysis revealed increased progressive and total sperm motility in correlation to higher self-reported physical activity. This supports maintaining regular exercise for improving semen quality parameters among healthy, non-infertile men.
