Physical activity and risk of cardiovascular disease in overweight and obese U.S adults
Annals of Epidemiology Aug 31, 2018
Zhang X, et al. - In a nationally-representative sample of participants aged 30-65 years in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2016 with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25kg/mb and no history of cardiovascular disease (CVD), researchers investigated if the association of physical activity and risk of CVD varies between overweight and obesity. Overweight and obesity were classified based on standard BMI cut-points. Findings showed better cardiovascular health among obese population in association with avoiding sedentary lifestyle. They noted overweight and obese adults showed different association of physical activity level and high-risk of CVD. Overweight adults showed no association between physical activity level and the CVD risk, while inactive or active obese adults were 33-40% less likely to be at high-risk of CVD vs sedentary obese adults.
