Physical activity and peripheral artery disease: Two prospective cohort studies and a systematic review
Atherosclerosis Jul 03, 2019
Heikkilä K, et al. - By analyzing original studies of physical activity and peripheral artery disease (PAD) as well as unpublished individual-level data from the Finnish Public Sector Study (n=63,924) and Whitehall II (n=10,200), researchers focused on the link between physical activity and development of PAD. The studies were identified from PubMed, EMBASE and CINAHL Plus and reported PAD prevalence or incidence according to categories of physical activity (an amount of activity per unit of time). With 152,188 participants, comprising 3,971 PAD patients, 18 studies (15 cross-sectional/case-control and 7 prospective studies) were analyzed. Less physical activity was reported among subjects with PAD vs those without PAD. According to the longitudinal findings, PAD risk is reduced in relation to physical activity and more intense physical activity is linked with lower odds of developing PAD.
