Physical activity and peripheral artery disease: Two prospective cohort studies and a systematic review

Atherosclerosis May 17, 2019

Heikkila K, et al. - Researchers analyzed evidence from 18 studies (15 cross-sectional/case-control and 7 prospective studies) involving 152,188 participants to examine the link between physical activity and development of peripheral artery disease (PAD). These studies were original inquiries into physical activity and PAD and were identified from PubMed, EMBASE and CINAHL Plus. This analysis included studies assessing PAD prevalence or incidence according to categories of physical activity (an amount of activity per unit of time). From the Finnish Public Sector Study with 63,924 participants and Whitehall II with 10,200 participants, the unpublished individual-level data were analyzed. The levels of physical activity were lower in individuals with PAD vs those without PAD. An attenuated risk of PAD was shown in relation to physical activity, by longitudinal findings.
