Phosphate abnormalities and outcomes among admissions to the intensive care unit: A retrospective multicentre cohort study

Journal of Critical Care Apr 22, 2021

Sin JCK, Laupland KB, Ramanan M, et al. - Researchers analyzed a retrospective cohort to determine how serum phosphate abnormalities at intensive care unit (ICU) admission could influence the risk of death and length of stay among critically ill patients. This study involved 13,155 patients, of these, 1424 (10.8%) were identified to have hypophosphataemia and 2,544 (19.3%) had hyperphosphataemia. The mean admission phosphate concentration was detected to be 1.25 (SD, ±0.43) mmol/L. Findings revealed an independent association of both hypophosphatemia and hyperphosphatemia with an elevated case fatality rate as well as ICU length of stay in this large multicentre ICU cohort.
